Overview and Opportunities

Whether you want to help a young child learn to read or help a high school student with calculus, VIPS will train you and make a match for you.   You can... tutor or mentor a student during or after school... demonstrate your skills or interests by leading an after-school club or activity... volunteer in the office with graphic design, web layout, filing or other special assignments that arise from time to time.   Our services are offered to Providence public school students, grades K through 12, at no cost to them or their families.   Our public school students are filled with potential, and a good education is their tomorrow.  Your contribution can make a lifetime of difference to a student.

VIPS places over 1,200 volunteers a year, in classrooms throughout Providence's public schools.  Most of our volunteers are tutors or mentors and they all provide academic support and positive reinforcement for students.

Our programs are designed to provide students and volunteers with great opportunities to grow and learn. Our major volunteer opportunity areas include:

In-school tutoring- In the elementary, middle and high schools, volunteers meet with students during the school day to provide academic assistance, generally on a one-to-one basis.  Students generally need help with math and reading comprehension.

In-school mentoring - In the elementary schools, volunteers meet with students to provide academic support and social mentoring, generally one a one-to-one basis.

After-school and summer programs - Volunteers work with middle and high school students at VIPS' Technology Center to provide academic support, career development and workforce readiness programs.
