What is Power Lunch?
Power Lunch is literacy program that pairs corporate volunteers with elementary school children, one-to-one. Participating companies range from small to large, from both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. Once a week volunteers and students share books and conversation while they eat lunch together at the school. The Power Lunch program benefits children academically and socially by bringing a diverse selection of children’s literature into schools and providing students with caring adult readers who act as informal mentors and positive role models.

The Power Lunch program goals are:

To encourage a child to read by:

  • Promoting enthusiasm for literature
  • Assisting child to overcome apprehension of reading
  • Building comprehension, listening and vocabulary skills
  • Increasing attention and concentration

To expand a child’s opportunities for success by:

  • Exposing the child to new experiences and information
  • Helping the child to articulate thoughts
  • Enhancing imagination, insight, and independent thinking
  • Building self-esteem and confidence

The Benefits to the Student:

  • They learn that reading is fun and, consequently, become more enthusiastic about books and learning.
  • They are exposed to new places and ideas through the reading materials that their volunteers share with them. They learn to think more creatively.
  • Their listening and vocabulary skills improve. They become more articulate and insightful.
  • Through their volunteers they are exposed to the world of work.
  • They become more self-confident because they know that their volunteers make time for them and enjoying reading with them.
  • Students develop reading skills and a love for books, build vocabulary, and have a role model.
