Students Catch More Than Fish With Tutor/Mentor

Windmill Elementary School fourth graders picked up a few fishing tips from dedicated first year VIPS tutor/mentor, Dwight Brouillard, Jr., and his mother, a self-proclaimed fishing fanatic. A construction engineer with Garofalo & Associates, Inc., Dwight thoroughly enjoyed his weekly tutoring sessions with the fourth grader he was assigned, Devante Castro.  He was delighted when Devante's math skills improved so much that he beat Dwight at a math version of Scrabble two times!  An accomplished artist and dedicated volunteer, Dwight is one of our many volunteer mentors who change kids’ lives for the better.

Eager to explore a variety of engaging opportunities, Dwight introduced fishing – and his mother – to Devante and his fellow students.  Although Windmill School playground, where the lessons occurred, did not offer up any fish, students caught some valuable lessons. They caught a lesson in patience, as they waited their turns to learn how to use the fishing rods and then practice with them. They caught a lesson in cooperation and teamwork, and used the fishing rods without hurting other students in the vicinity of the rods and reels. They caught a lesson in the physics and geometry of casting and aiming for a specific spot. They caught a lesson that adults care, thanks to Dwight and his mom!  And, last but not least, they caught enthusiasm, energy and excitement.  Although the entire class gained some pointers in fishing, Dwight made certain to take Devante out for a one-on-one fishing experience. Devante is so excited to use his newly-learned fly fishing skills this summer when his neighbor will take him fishing.

Fourth graders at Windmill Elementary School try their hands at fishing!  They didn't catch any fish, but they had a great time.  Thanks to Dwight Brouillard and his mother for teaching the kids the fine art of fishing.
